Saffron Walden takes the second part of its name from the threatening fortification of Walden Castle, erected by the Normans after the Conquest, and the first from the rare and precious saffron crocus, for which the town became famous.
Saffron Walden itself is an unspoilt country town, with narrow streets and old buildings, many of them 'pargeted'. The town's specialist shops are well worth exploring. Audley End, England's largest Jacobean mansion, is on the doorstep, and the beautiful university town of Cambridge is just 12 miles away. The Imperial War Museum at Duxford and the racing town of Newmarket are also within driving distance.
We throughly enjoyed our two-night stay and felt welcome and at home. The sloping floor to out bedroom was unexpected, but authentic and amusing. No problem except receiving a bump on the head from a low doorway into the bathroom.
