Saffron Walden takes the second part of its name from the threatening fortification of Walden Castle, erected by the Normans after the Conquest, and the first from the rare and precious saffron crocus, for which the town became famous.

Saffron Walden itself is an unspoilt country town, with narrow streets and old buildings, many of them 'pargeted'. The town's specialist shops are well worth exploring. Audley End, England's largest Jacobean mansion, is on the doorstep, and the beautiful university town of Cambridge is just 12 miles away. The Imperial War Museum at Duxford and the racing town of Newmarket are also within driving distance.

Guest Reviews

Overall rating: 3.7 out of 5
We stayed here to see a show at Saffron Hall. It was easily within walking distance.
We'd seen some poor reviews beforehand but the hotel had replied well so we gave it a go.
It's a 3 star hotel so that's what we'd expected. The room was ok, a little noisy perhaps but then it was above a bar. The other guests were most of the noise.
We had a meal and breakfast. The cooked breakfast was very good but the buffet was lacking much fruit choice and had zero pastries.
